| - We took our car to San Tan Hyundai to have some recall work done. While they had it, they did a "complimentary" inspection and recommended over $3,000 in repairs and maintenance items. Among their recommendations: replacing the timing belt, all other belts, and all four tires.
Interestingly, we had all the belts replaced only a week ago by a friend who is a mechanic. Also, we replaced the tires within the past month.
They have destroyed any credibility they ever had in my mind.
UPDATE:
The day after I posted the review above, a gentleman identifying himself as the parts and service manager at San Tan Hyundai contacted me by private message. He asked for my full name so that he could look up the service records for our car and recommendations that were made.
I declined to respond directly to him because I believe that reliance on service records may have been at the root of the issue. A complimentary inspection should be just that: an inspection. The recommendations should be based on actual observations, not standard service guidelines based on the assumption that the customer always has the car serviced at the dealership, which we do not.
Although the mechanic would not have been able to see the timing belt with only a flashlight inspection, he or she should have been able to see that the other belts and all four tires were brand new.
I truly appreciate the service manager's interest in getting to the root of the problem, and he deserves credit for promptly following up. My advice going forward would be to see that all complimentary inspections are actual inspections and that service advisers are not pressured to upsell customers on services they don't need. Customers who have been burned by dealerships in the past would find this refreshing, and although the car business is highly competitive, I believe this approach would be more profitable in the long run.
Although I originally gave San Tan Hyundai one star, I have since upped the rating to two stars because they showed some interest in resolving the issue. Also, they had a nice selection of doughnuts and bagels.
