| - I visited Pour Cleveland for the first time, and I was quite impressed! As a former fancy-pants barista, I can be pretty picky, but this new cafe in the 5th St. Arcade hit all the high notes.
The physical space itself is well thought out. The seating area is roomy, with big communal tables, and the windows facing Euclid Ave. let in a lot of natural light. The area behind the counter looks organized and well kept, with a good amount of room for the baristas to work in. There's even counter seating near the espresso machine... perfect for nerds like me to kill some time and watch latte art.
Pour Cleveland serves Counter Culture coffee, which is nationally renowned for a reason. However, when I first heard a cafe was opening that would serve Counter Culture, I wondered why they would choose to serve something from North Carolina instead of something roasted locally (or, preferably, roasted themselves). After my visit, I came to the conclusion that overall it's a good thing; that serving this brand in Ohio gives people an opportunity to try all kinds of excellent coffee, instead of from the same one or two great roasters here in Cleveland.
The drinks I had were amazing. I got a macchiatio and a pour-over of an Ethiopian coffee. I asked for the single origin Kenyan espresso, but instead got the holiday blend, which was well balanced and smooth, and blended well with the milk. Just a few words of praise for Pour Cleveland, based on why I didn't end up with the single origin: the barista opted not to serve me the espresso she pulled simply because it was a bad shot. This sounds simple, but not every barista (or every establishment) has the knowledge to tell when it's a bad shot, or will care enough to pull it again if it doesn't turn out they way they like. Most will just serve it anyway. The Ethiopian pour-over made my espresso-purist friend begin to doubt his "no pour-overs" stance after tasting how delicious my coffee was, and said for the first time he felt that someone wasn't lying when they said they could taste blueberries in an Ethiopian coffee. Haha!
Just as a warning to those used to popping in and out to Starbucks: it will take a few minutes longer to get your coffee, but don't sweat the wait. I'd rather hang out for a minute and have a beautiful drink prepared from scratch than drink some old, burnt-ass grossness out of a carafe.
So check out Pour Cleveland, enjoy a delicious cup of coffee, maybe even stay and watch the world go by. I promise you'll enjoy it!
