| - Air Canada gets a lot of hate from people - some of it is justified, but to be fair Air Canada does a pretty decent job as Canada's flag carrier. Although they do like to boast a bit, their 4-star Skytrax rating is not unfounded and they are most definitely miles ahead of other North American carriers.
Cabin product:
AC definitely has a solid and consistent hard product offering, with in-flight entertainment at every seat even in short-haul aircraft. While offerings aren't as vast as some airlines like Emirates, it's definitely sufficient, although the AVOD systems are definitely showing their age - the touchscreens are a bit laggy and the whole system is not the most responsive. USB ports and AC power outlets are available at most seats, and seat pitch and width are generally fine.
**EXCEPTION: the new 3-class 777-300ERs being added to certain routes have abysmally uncomfortable seating (3-4-3 configuration in economy, and studio pods in J do not have all-aisle access and are generally inferior to the pods).
Domestic business class is generally quite decent and surpasses European airlines, which tend to use an economy configuration with the middle seat blocked as an ersatz business class. International business class with the lie-flat pods are very good, with a herringbone configuration that offers direct aisle access for all seats. The pods are definitely geared for solo business travelers, as they are quite private and it is difficult to converse with others.
The new business class being introduced on the Dreamliner manages to improve on the current pods, retaining the all-aisle access but moving to a reverse herringbone configuration, making it easier for middle seats to talk with each other and giving window seats a view. I'm also a fan of how the AVOD screens will no longer need to be latched for take-off and landing, and the table seems to be easier to use as well.
Service:
Generally a decent level of service. Flight attendants are all usually polite and friendly, as are other staff. I've found that AC tends to be more proactive with customers than UA. Meal service is generally adequate, as is wine selection.
AC's frequent flier program, Aeroplan, manages to be decent, but can be confusing and restrictive at times. The award availability search tool is above average, but results are skewed towards AC and other airlines that have fuel surcharges. Recent devaluation on some routes, but the 90000 points for a roundtrip business class flight to Europe is a great deal. Introduction of Distinction status, alongside AC's Altitude program (the one that actually counts towards Star Alliance Gold and other elite benefits for AC) can be a bit confusing.
