  • While looking for an apartment as part of my upcoming move to Pittsburgh, I came across Walnut Capital's Flats on Fifth. At first glance, it seemed really promising. The management company itself, as well as other apartment locations, have some good reviews. Prices are a bit much, but it seemed like the going rate, especially for what I would be getting - a brand new building means a brand new apartment, with brand new appliances, a washer/dryer in the unit, a fancy gym, a business center - it seemed worth the $1400 a month. After having been in contact with one of the staff members, and many back and forth emails discussing the apartment that I had wanted, I finally applied. A 859 sq.ft. apartment on the second floor, with a layout that I was happy with. But after I applied and was approved, the lease I received stated an 816 sq.ft. apartment, and the layout was a different one. After again contacting the staff person, he confirmed that the layout that I had wanted did not exist - there had been changes in layout plans during construction. I asked if I could change my choice in the apartment, and he said yes, and things almost ended with that. A couple of weeks later, my dad was on a business trip in Canada, and decided to drive down to Pittsburgh to check out the apartment. While he was still inside the apartment, he called and yelled at me that he would not allow me to get this apartment(!!!). The layout was awful - the wall between the living room and bedroom was lowered in order to allow sunlight into the bedroom, since there was no window in the bedroom. But that wasn't what really had bothered him. The worst part was that the entrance to the apartment was through the parking lot - not the lobby; even if you entered the lobby, you'd have to go through the garage to get to the door of the second floor apartments. A few days later, I once again emailed and called the staff person that I was in contact with. This time I told him that I wanted to withdraw my application, and also to receive my $500 deposit back. This was because the information on the website was completely misleading - the apartment in question did not exist. He would have to check with his manager, and of course this took two weeks because they were in the midst of another opening at a different location. Two weeks later, I called again, and was let know that I wouldn't be able to get my deposit back. I demanded to speak to the manager. After waiting for a minute, he got back on the line, and let me know he would in fact be able to reimburse the deposit money, with a check that would be sent within 10 business days. The $50 for the application will not be refunded because "that's what it costs us to process the application". For an apartment that did not exist in the first place. But at least I got my deposit back, and no longer have to do business with them. Advice: check out the apartment in person to make sure you like it. Blueprints can be misleading, and in this case, completely false. Update: I moved to Pittsburgh a week ago, and decided to go see the apartment building. They're still not open, at least a month's delay. Glad my dad made that trip!!!
