I called DoorTech to get a quotation on a new garage door as there was a significant dent in the lowest panel and the entire door was quite weathered. This is a basic insulated door. I'd been quoted a job nearly $900 by another vendor, which included re-trimming the frame with a rubber stripping and painting the entire door and trim. I was told they did not carry my door in stock in the color needed, brown. Subsequently DoorTech came out for a scheduled appointment and quoted I believe in the $700 range for the exact same services, door, trim and paint. As I did with the other vendor, I explained to DoorTech that we are putting our house up for sale so was finishing up some last minute details. The DoorTech representative then asked why I wanted a compete new door. In my naiveté and later my embarrassment I said I presumed that would be necessary. He then asked if I would be interested in just replacing the damaged panel and painting the entire door. He promised that it would look good as new. And the best part was the total price for the panel, trim and paint was $514.95. He acknowledged the new panel would be in white so I would have to suffer a week with a one panel white door until they painted the entire door in brown. No problem and I scheduled the job, which was done in two phases. Phase one was the panel and trim replacement and phase two was the painting. I was ecstatic at how nice the door looked after painting and sure enough pretty much good as new. A couple minor disappointments were their sequence of installing the rubber trim prior to painting meant the very outer edges of the door that is behind the trim doesn't get painted. It's not noticeable where the old brown paint remains but sometimes noticeable where the new white panel door now exists. I say sometimes because a thin white reveal appears when the door is going up or going down. Once completely closed you can't see any white. Also, the inside hinges were not painted and there too either old brown or white shows when the door is opening or closing. I think I understand why in both cases and will explain. The painter indicated where the newly painted trim meets the newly painted door, paint WILL adhere and that I should NOT open the door without first running my finger or a putty knife along that edge to essentially break any paint seal that may have occurred in the hot Phoenix temperatures. He said I should do this for a couple days until it is no longer sticking. He said otherwise the paints grip will actually damage the door! My wife and I took great care to follow his instructions and sure enough all worked out and once the paint cured it no longer stuck. I think this same concept probably applies to why the inside hinges were not painted, though that was not addressed prior. In my opinion they should not install the rubber trim until the door is completely painted and cured. Come back and then install and paint the trim. This however would require a third visit. Just my humble opinion. I'm not sure what options are available for the inside hinges. I think it's also worth mentioning that DoorTech gave me a lower cost option when the first vendor did not. I think this speaks to a best business practice and certainly a lesson learned by me to apply to any and all requests for work quotations. Seems obvious when you think about it but if I hadn't bid this out to more than one vendor I could just as easily paid more. All-in-all I am quite satisfied with the results given I took the lower cost option. I would surely call upon DoorTech again in the future.
