  • 6+ years in Toronto and I finally went here last night for Metamorphosis with a friend. Both the theatre and the show were pretty great. I should preface this short review by writing that I am not much of a theatre buff and do not really go for musicals. After six plus years in the third largest centre for stage performances in North America, I can probably count up those I have attended on two hands. So, I can't really compare or exercise a well trained critical eye. All of that out of the way, the RAT is what you would likely expect in a really old theatre which of course makes it super special. Red carpets, wood panelling, red velvet seats--they just don't make 'em like this anymore. Now, there are tradeoffs to be had. As states below, the seats are small and close together. And you have to ascend/descend stairs to get to them. From what I could see, there were no elevators. There are all kinds of nooks at the RAT--sometimes it felt like a maze. We sat in the balcony. I did not mind the closeness for a 90 min. play but if you are only used to the seating at your megaplex, this will take some getting used to. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. As for the play itself, it was worth the time but challenging and mostly in how it was acted. (Lots of yelling). It was full of tense moments but Gregory is able to bring out a sadness, at least for me. I mean, you can't help but feel some genuine hatred and sympathy for the characters. It is certainly an interesting take on Kafta's work. The stage was set up in a pretty neat way--I really liked how the house was portrayed. And of course see Gregory move about in his new form was pretty convincing. If you are a fan of this book, I'd certainly recommend seeing this play. And if not this play, seeing something here is well worth the time. This is an essential piece of Toronto history and worth visiting if your visiting or if you live here. Anyone seriously into theatre would definitely not want to miss it.
