  • Immediate processing and then I waited: 24 hours for a bed; 18 hours for IV that was installed properly; 8 hours for ham sandwich; 6 hours for glass of water. 22 hours of constant noise and then they decide to wax and buff ER floor in my section by machine for 2 hours at 4 AM. This was the most peaceful interlude in first 24 hours. Previous 22 hours I suffered the pain of 2 psych patients intermittently screaming for their life while waiting for beds. Alarms constantly going off every 30 seconds from blood pressure monitors or EKG's that failed to get readings. These were meant to alarm nurses but since they are incessantly trying and failing to get readings, nurses pay no attention whatsoever to the warning screaches going off 36 inches from your eardrums. I hear one nurse state that she waits for patients to beg before she responds to patient requests. Other staff laugh. Very funny. They forget that patients are only 20 feet away from nurses station. "V", my late shift nurse, was not an ER nurse, which may be the reason that she was so kind and attentive. Harley, my morning nurse, told me that it was normal for my IV solution bag to remain full after 12 hours of use. When I finally get a room, I meet my hospital MD. He arranges to have my IV corrected to provide hydration for my kidneys that are dehydrated after 4 months of heavy antibiotics. After 24 hours, I have finally been asigned a room with a bed. Room A379. I try to take a shower. NO HOT WATER. 24 hours later and still no hot water. 2 nights with no sleep. 3 days without shower. Off menu Emergency Room ham sandwich was the only food I received that was edible. Nutritionist tells me that the unedible breakfast burrito, all tortlla with a splash of egg, is one of patient favorites. I can't eat it. This was only one example of the "food" offered during my stay. Neither I nor my roommate ever did more than taste the food. Totally exhausted, I attempt to check myself out so I can get some sleep and some decent food. The nurse's station finally sends the PT that I was supposed to see my first day since I was sent straight from my Pulmonolgist's office (Dr. Stewart) because I couldn't walk and breathe at the same time. PT didn't want to discharge me because of major flunctuations in my blood pressure after 72 hours of torture and irregular medication schedule but he couldn't even get a glass of water for me during my PT exam. He had no more luck with hot water to my shower than I did. I filed a complaint re: no hot water and checked myself out. They blamed the poor service on the winter season. I guess I should have waited for spring to check in. If this was a restaurant the county would close them down forthwith. Consider yourself forewarned. Think twice before choosing VMC Emergency Room.
