On any summer Tuesday evening in Calgary you'll find me playing Ultimate Frisbee. The sport takes me to different locations all throughout Calgary, and the socializing afterward has me visiting some pubs I may never otherwise get to.
This evening, I found myself at Scotsman's Well Pub. A spacious venue with ample seating and a couple of pool tables, the pub easily accommodated the 6 players from my team that came out. It could have very easily held the entire 14 players on our roster without any trouble.
The first question we always ask after a frisbee game is "Do you guys have any team specials?" To a team that just spent the previous 2 hours running around, team specials are gold. Many places have deals on wings or discounts on jugs of beer if you show up in your team jersey with at least 6 players or so. Scotman's did not. The lack of the team special cost them a star in my rating and the potential for going somewhere else the next time we're playing up north.
On a positive note, they do have daily specials. The Tuesday special was an 8" two topping pizza for $7.50 ($12.00 regular price). The pizza was made fresh to order, and adequately cheesy. Three pizzas and a full platter of appetizers seemed to quiet the rumbling stomachs of my teammates.
The service met my expectations, although I felt our server went above and beyond when she recommended going with a schooner of domestic beer rather than a pitcher as it ended up being less expensive overall (weird!).
The calamari included in the platter was also decent. Some places can't make calamari to save their lives. Scotsman's can.
Overall, I didn't find anything to set this pub apart from every other pub in Calgary, nor was there any deterrent to going back on a non-frisbee evening if I were in the neighbourhood.
