I knew I was in trouble when I saw the window display containing a few Mary Higgins Clark books. Although the quaintness of the store seems fitting for the charming downtown area, the inventory-especially the used books- is very middlebrow. Many mass-market paperbacks of genre fiction and Chicken Soup for the Soul (filling up an entire room) and the art section seems limited to coffee table books. Very little appeal to serious readers of literature. There is a devotion to having a collection of new fiction and bestsellers, but the curation-or lack of- of mass-market genre fiction like your grandma's westerns with cracked spines or your mom's stash of romance paperbacks-seems to dwarf the potential of this space. I was hoping for a more quality selection of used books.
