  • Do not rent from Dollar/Thrifty! You are warned! I arrived at Vegas 6/9 Thursday night. Most of the rental car counters were empty or just 1 to 2 people in line. There are 20 people lined up in Dollar/Thrifty area. Did not know Dollar/Thrifty is one company now (Hated Thrifty for their rip-off and cheating tactics to tourists). After the line not moving at all for 15 min, I began to listen in on what is going on at the counter. Looks like the new Dollar/Thrifty not only adapted the Thrifty tactics, but more! The agents are all trying to sell the expensive insurance and car upgrades, and they did not give up even the customers nicely said No. The customer who was closest to the line, where we all could clearly hear the conversation, was hustled to buy every single add-on. He sounded line a European business traveler, and the agent (woman with accent) kept saying "In US, everyone buys ..." or "It will be insane not to". This is what Dollar/Thrifty agent are doing most of the time instead of service our rental need! After 30 min of wait, it was my turn. As expected, the agent asked me which add-on insurance/waiver I want to buy. I said "No insurance". He ignored me and asked me again, this time with a firmer tone. I again said "No". He then acted totally surprised, "You do not want waiver? Do you know what will happen if something happens to this car?" I told him No again. He began to act agitated. At this point I was losing my patience. I raised my voice and told him I do not want any add-on and he need to move forward. Seeing me getting angry, he stopped the selling the start the rental contract. Here is the next stupid thing Dollar/Thrifty did. IT NOW TREATS ALL CUSTOMER AS THIEVES! They now require you to bring the last gas receipt which the gas station has to be within 10 miles of the rental car center. They actually put in the contract. If not, they will charge you $9.99 per gallon if they determine the gas tank is not completely full. Dollar/Thrifty also charge you fee if you return the car early. I was renting two days. The contract said if I return the car one day earlier, not only I need to pay for two days of rental as in my contract, but also $75 more! The car I got has a few huge scratches on the rear bumper and a big dent on the trunk. Surprisingly, when I checked out at the gate and told the guy about the damage, he just said "OK, got it, no problem". Knowing what kind of company Thrifty is, I insisted he wrote down the damage on my contract. When returning the car, the agent did look at the bumper and trunk damage. I showed him the note when checking out, and he walked away. If I did not have the note, I bet there was a much bigger and fierce conversation! I rent from various rental car companies 10-15 times a year, mostly with Avis. Except with Thrifty, I never have any experience like this one. Plus, Dollar's price is same as everyone else!
