| - When I first moved to Calgary, after living with a family friend for 2 months, I found my own apartment 2 doors down. It was a great little place, it was in Kensington, and it was old (which means character, and a bit of mold). Of course, I didn't have any furniture. And while most of my furniture was purchased at Ikea, my living room futon was purchased here at Futons For Less. Chosen for it's proximity to my apartment, as most of my favourite places were (my local watering hole was first chosen because it was literally the closest bar to my apartment), Futons For Less was one of the best experiences I've had in Calgary.
Shopping for furniture, especially futons, is a bit like playing Russian Roulette. You're never sure what you're getting and you are almost always looking for something cheap. I was trying to keep costs down, but I wanted something with a bit better construction quality then one might find at Ikea. Not expecting much, I went into the store and began shopping.
I fully expected an exchange like this:
Me: I need a futon.
Them: Over there.
Me: Suggestions?
Them: Those ones fold.
Thankfully, the exchange didn't go that way. The gentlemen I dealt with, who I believe is the owner or manager, actually knew a lot about futons. He walked me through their showroom and explained the differences between them, the advantages of going with wood or metal. Not at all what I expected (obviously, since you clearly read my expected exchange above). Surprisingly, he was brutally honest about what to expect after I purchase my futon. He made it clear that eventually the wooden planks would start pushing through the mattress so you feel it in your back. He told me what I should buy to avoid that (he didn't sell it, but basically he was suggesting some kind of thin rubber to go underneath the mattress), which of course I didn't buy. Sure enough, about 2 years later, what he predicted happened. He also gave me some tips on keeping it in good shape, checking the bolts on occasion to make sure they are still tight, which I also didn't do, because I was a lazy bachelor.
Eventually, I bought the futon and mattress from him. He even agreed to stay open a bit late one night so I could arrange a truck to pick it up. And I still have the futon, although we basically use it as a spare bed now. It's seen a lot of traffic*, but it's still in great shape. * I rewrote that line a few times, but really couldn't make it sound clean. Deal with it.
