| - Of course you know your friendly, local Whole Foods. Yes, the one that sells expensive things that are supposed to be better for you than the cheap stuff you get at Smith's, but I am not here to tell you about that Whole Foods. Although, I will take a moment to say that $5/lb food bar Wednesdays have made me a happy non-cooking camper on more than one occasion.
Now, on to what I am really here to tell you about: the unexpectedly wonderful floral department, especially at this Whole Foods. I first discovered this little secret back in Atlanta when I wanted to get fresh roses to put on my wedding cake. I didn't want to go with the obvious answer: florist. I scoured the internet. Then, I realized that roses were actually rather cheap at Whole Foods. I asked if I could place a special order, and they said no problem! I ended up with all of the beautiful roses I needed at great price with no hassle whatsoever.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when I needed to source 4-dozen long stemmed roses, and once again, I thought of Whole Foods. I arrived at my local Whole Foods and chatted with Gary about placing a special order of long stemmed roses in a neon-ish color. I loved his can-do attitude. He took down my information and said he would get back in touch with me in a couple of days.
When I didn't hear from him, I called Whole Foods and left a message. I was a little upset and had decided that perhaps I would not get the roses. Next day, first thing in the morning I received one of the most apologetic voice mails I have ever received. When I called Gary back, he told me he had contacted his supplier and gave me a long list of colors that were available. I told him I was concerned about the roses staying healthy and being ready to give as single stems. That is when he informed me he would clean all 4 dozen of them up and put them in single water vials for me! He went out of his way to make sure that I would have no problem picking them up, as he was not going to be working that day. He even made a follow-up call to confirm the time I would be coming to retrieve the roses. When I arrived, the roses were perfectly prepared and beautiful.
This was both a marvelous and unexpected experience thanks to Gary. When you need flowers, definitely consider the Whole Foods option. This is useful for brides-to-be, men who are in the doghouse, men who are trying to impress, and probably some other people I am forgetting.
