  • It had been a few months since I had been to the zoo and my family (including 6 year old and 10 year old nephews) wanted to come visit and go on the day after Christmas. We got there around 1:30 and it was not busy at all, the weather was overcast but warm for the end of December. There is free parking which is wonderful and it is $12 for adults/$11 for seniors & kids. We checked the AAA rate but it was $15 a person which I was confused why it was more expensive than general admission but whatever. They do give $1 off your total with a Shop N Save Perks card. For the size of the zoo, the quality of exhibits and how healthy and non-miserable the animals seem to be, the price is good. It is on a hill so if you have trouble walking or are pushing a wheelchair or heavy stroller the Pittsburgh Zoo could prove to be a challenge. There has been a lot of construction since I was there at the beginning of the year and the new Islands section is a nice addition, it was a neat viewpoint to see the top of the gorilla habitat and there was one walking around up there. My nephews liked that there were a lot of little areas where they could climb on things, pose on statues, etc. The interactive exhibits are nice too; my nephews liked petting the stingrays and really enjoyed the tunnels in the meerkat display. I was surprised that the only bears now are the polar bears and they did come out and walk around for a bit, no diving in the water when we were there though. The tunnels under the polar bears and sharks are a great view. I think people do forget that they are real animals and they do sleep or sometimes not want to come out. I'm definitely not a fan of circuses, aquariums and animals as entertainment in general and call me a hypocrite but I do like the Pittsburgh Zoo a lot. The animals all seem healthy and there are lots of enrichment toys in their habitats that they aren't just staring at a wall. My biggest advice is to AVOID THE FREE DAYS. Mothers Day, Fathers Day and the free RAD days offered by the county are great but it is sooooo packed you can't even enjoy yourself.
