Yummy yummy pastries.
There isn't a huge selection, but a rule of thumb to keep in mind is that better places tend to have small selections, because then they can focus on what they're good at. La Gourmandine is one of those places. Unlike other bakeries in pittsburgh, there's nothing bad here. Even my least favourite items, the baguette sandwiches aren't bad. They're crusty and probably what they're supposed to be, just no my thing. The focaccias in the back are quite good and cheap. Ask to get them warmed up.
Sweet things are where this bakery really shines. From the clafoutis to the tarts to the choux pastries, the beauty is in the details. These sweet items are not cheap, but they are worth every penny and more. The pastry cream is perfect. The fruit used is at the peak of ripeness. The tiny chocolate labels used on some of the items are the best quality dark chocolate. The attention to details this establishment has is insane. I wouldn't be surprised if they sourced butter from Europe and fruit from local farms. I haven't even talked about the croissants. If you want to ever try a "real" croissant, here's a good place to try them. Don't leave the bakery without getting one of each.
Go to this bakery. Try everything. Start looking for real estate in the immediate vicinity. And for goodness sakes, get the chocolate croissants.
