| - We came here for our anniversary and I know we hit the restaurant at the beginning of a dual-convention week and I know how hard that can be, but geez... This was not the experience we expected.
For starters, one of our servers, while pleasant, was very obviously sick. She had almost no voice and was sucking on a mentholated cough drop every time she attempted to talk to our table. She was as pleasant as she could be but it was obvious she was really ill. Not really what you want around your food when people are literally dying of the flu. Management: I know you're slammed but LET YOUR SERVERS GO HOME SICK WHEN THEY'RE SICK. Seriously. The other server on the team was fine but pretty aloof.
I further complicated things by coming in with a trio of allergies: milk, egg, and soy. My husband called ahead to make sure they could accommodate us because we didn't want to make a stink and the servers were kind enough to make note of this (it was clearly marked in our reservation, which is great) at the beginning of the evening.
I ordered a martini. It took awhile and arrived in a broken glass. I asked for a replacement. We had tap water; my glass sat empty most of the night because there was no one around to refill it.
Onto the food... I was a little disappointed that the servers acknowledged the allergies but didn't offer any suggestions as to which menu items were "safe" and which weren't or what, if any, adjustments could be made. I don't like to be that person who asks a hundred questions and the servers made it clear they were in a hurry so I just picked a few things and asked specifically about those.
We started with the seafood sampler tower. Everything was delicious. The oysters were beautifully fresh and expertly cleaned, the shrimp were large and juicy, the the cocktail sauce well-made, etc. Next came a butter lettuce salad with champagne vinaigrette - the dressing was fantastic. A simple salad and totally overpriced (hey, it's the strip!) but executed well.
For our entree, we shared a strip steak that came with mashed potatoes, charred shishito peppers and green onions, and a madeira sauce. We asked if we could switch out the mashed potatoes for their Kennebec french fries due to the dairy allergy and were told that was fine. There was more than a half an hour between the salad and steak courses. WAY too long. When the steak finally arrived, they had split it for us (nice) and given all of the sides to my husband and just the half steak, a pepper, and onion to me. We asked about the fries and the server said we never ordered them. I mean, we had an entire conversation... but okay.
The steak was good but not great. It was cooked unevenly and clearly sat on the cooker too long on one side and not enough on the other so it was part almost rare and part medium well. That's no way to treat a $57 steak. Flavor was good though which is a major plus since I didn't have any sauce. The shishito and green onion were smoky and full of yum.
My absolute favorite part of the meal was the surprise dessert they brought out for our anniversary. It was presented with great flourish to my husband, with the server saying "The chef sent you a surprise! You get a miniature milkshake and a petite donut" then he turned to me and said "And I got you a strawberry." Epic. Thanks for the strawberry!
Look, I know allergies aren't easy to deal with and I don't expect the kitchen to pull something custom out just because I waltzed in but there was zero attempt to be helpful - that's fine in Denny's, I guess, but you expect more from a place with AquaKnox's reputation and price point. Beyond that, the service just wasn't up to par. There are a lot of places to eat in Vegas and although I had a great night with my husband, because he's awesome, we won't be back to AquaKnox. The sad part is, I don't think they care.
