| - After years of growing my hair out I was looking to donate to Locks of Love. I came across R Salon here on Yelp and decided to call and talk to them. I told them that I was looking for someone familiar with the Locks of Love process and they began listing off the requirements just like that. I was sold. I made an appointment for the soonest possible time (long hair and the AZ summer heat do not mix well), and was told that the owner, Rick, could see me in three days.
It was a bit confusing to find the right door (The main entrance is on the North face, not the South face) but once I made my way to the front desk I was greeted by Rick's assistant Marta who immediately set about making me feel at ease. One of my friends came for moral support and I was worried he would be in the way, but Marta put him in the chair right next to mine and encouraged him to take before and after pictures. Even the other staff members were interested in my donation and several stopped by the work station to offer support and congratulations.
I told Rick that other than donating, I had no real idea of what I wanted to do with my hair. He listened and was VERY understanding when I said that I was open to try almost anything, so long as it didn't take more than a few minutes to style in the morning. Then while Marta shampooed my hair, Rick talked with my friend about possible styles and when I came back he had laid out T-shirts for the both of us.
He then braided my hair and cut off about 16 inches to donate before setting about with the new style. He regularly asked if I was uncomfortable with the length or style, just to be certain that such a dramatic change wouldn't freak me out. The end result was nothing like I had gone in expecting, but still absolutely wonderful.
He was the first stylist ever to perfectly grasp my request for easy styling; while explaining how to style my hair each morning he said put this much product in your hands, work it through your hair like this, and your done. It was the first time ever that I hadn't been told that blow drying or straightening would be necessary. Perfect, especially since my hair is wavy and can be rather unruly. He even gave me a bottle of the product that he had used for free, since he knew that with my long hair I hadn't had the need for product.
It took less than five minutes to style my hair this morning and it looks just as good as it did yesterday. I was not expecting to leave with my hair this short, but I took a risk and gave him free rein to do as he pleased and he did a great job. I'm still getting used to the dramatic change, but it looks so good that I'm much less shocked than I would have expected. I highly recommend Rick, Marta, and R Salon in general. It was a great experience and I am more than pleased with the results.
