| - Simply put these are the best movers I've used and they are the cheapest of 30+ moving companies we researched.
My wife and I were moving locally and did many hours of research and calling before we picked J & R. We came up with a list of the 30 highest-rated moving companies on Yelp that also had more than 10 reviews. Some companies we were able to contact through Yelp or their websites, others we had to call up.
With respect to our move we were not interested in renting our own truck, and we did all boxing ourselves. We estimated we'd need a 22-foot (or larger) truck. We were moving from a single-story house to a two-story house.
After all our research on the 30 moving companies we eliminated 7 due to not being able to get in contact with them within a couple of days. We eliminated another 8 due to them not having a truck. I totally get why companies do this. It's more expensive for them to maintain their own fleet. In the end, renting your own truck MAY be cheaper, but you have to pick it up, drop it off at the same location (otherwise it's really expensive) and even though it says $39.95 for a one-day rental, they also charge you nearly $1 per mile for gas, so that can very quickly add up.
After eliminating half the companies as described above we then compared what we knew about the remaining 15. We were quoted various rates for two-man and three-man crews. Some places add on a travel fee, some have a minimum number of hours, some add on a fee if there are stairs, etc. Some companies are totally ignorant with respect to listening to the customer. I described our needs to one place and they wanted to use two trucks, a four-man crew, and estimated 7 hours!
Our three finalists were:
Family Movers Express (4.5 stars, 76 reviews) - Two-man crew for $100/hr, three-man crew for $130/hr. $50 travel fee.
Move 4 Less (4 stars, 299 reviews) - Two-man crew for $97/hr, three-man crew for $133/hr. Travel time is doubled in lieu of a flat fee. 3 hour minimum.
J & R Quality Movers - (5 stars, 32 reviews) - Two man crew for $85/hr, three-man for $120/hr. $50 travel fee. 2 hour minimum.
J & R was the cheapest and had the best reviews, although fewer reviews than the other places, but we decided to go with them and are very happy we did.
As for the actual move, it went off without a hitch. They called early and said they may be a bit late, but were actually right on time. Our crew was Alex, Joe, and a third mover whose name I did not get.
Start to finish it took about 3.5 hours, including about 30 minutes of travel time. Nothing (as of 2 days after the move) appears to be broken or missing, so I'm pretty happy!
This is the third moving company I've used in Vegas including Warren's Homework and Two Men and a Truck, both of which had some missteps so I was wary of using either of them again. Not true with J & R -- I will definitely use them for my next move.
PS Unless your move is super small (e.g. studio or one bedroom) you will save money by picking a three-man crew. Seriously, look it up on Google!
