  • A heavy sadness came over me as I visited this park recently. There was a massive backup on the I-17, and I knew that I couldn't make my volleyball game on time. Therefore, I just decided to do some Volleyball drills at this park. I was aghast as to how empty this place was on a weekday, and how run down this place had become. It seems that its current state of emptiness and disrepair in comparison to its glory days is diametrically opposed to my married life's path. My marriage started out really rocky, with many boulders and a seemingly prolonged uphill climb, but after that, it blossomed into something very special. And we were left with wonderful memories of our family and the lives we have impacted that resonate to this day. RMSC started out with a bang, and was the highlight of the City of Phoenix nearly two decades ago. At one time, this park did deliver on its promise for quite a long time. Now, it's best days appear to be behind it. Back then, this was a premiere facility with top notch soccer, plenty of volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts. I remember the day that Rose Mofford inaugurated this facility. There were certain Sunday evenings during the summer wherein some of the Phoenix Suns' players would actually come down to play street ball with the local hoopsters. There were also national soccer competitions that would converge at this park. And the volleyball scene here was amazing! On Sundays, you had to get a team together, or you weren't jumping in to play in any of the hard courts. Even if you managed to pull together a few people, you would eventually get beaten badly due to the high quality talent that played here. The same goes for the Sand Courts. That was then. But, upon my recent visit, and random inquiries with some of the regulars that were sitting by the basketball courts, these folks stated that not much really goes on here anymore. I surmised that there is probably too much competition and alternatives to RMSC, and there are better facilities throughout the valley for various venues and sports, that people no longer make the long trek to this facility. There may be still a following at the softball field, and the dog park, but when I was there; there wasn't much activity at those venues either. This is definitely a shadow of its former glory that it may never recover from, unless there is a revitalization of the area - which happens to be near the Metro Center. Metro Center is another Phoenix Icon that has seen better days, as well. I observed many things that were in a state of disrepair, and perhaps the City of Phoenix has better things to do with its budget than to properly maintain a desolate park. However, at the present time, it's just a good place for me to visit. Perhaps, even just taking a walk or practice. All my best experiences here are simply memories now. On this particular evening, I was the lone person at the Volleyball courts wondering where have all the people gone?
