| - We were looking for an affordable sushi place in uptown - and we found Press. Of course while the sushi is affordable, "affordable sushi place" doesn't even come close to describing the great city joint.
Press is a fun foodie hangout set right in the middle of a retail wine shop on Trade Street. There is a sushi bar, but that's only the beginning.
The regular menu sports delectable treats such as a Black Forest Ham and Brie Panine, a Goat Cheese Fig and Prosciutto Quesadilla, a Fried Egg and Grilled Jarlsberg Cheese BLT, and an impressive selection of Artisinal Cheeses. Oh - and the most expensive dish on the menu? $9.00
The sushi menu includes a few standards (Nigiri from $3-$5 for 2 pieces, traditional rolls from $5-$6). The specialty rolls, though, are to die for! Don't bother with the traditional stuff when the Press Signature Roll (tuna, crab & avocado topped with spicy Aioli, crispy garlic & shallots - $10) and Volcanic Roll (crispy calamari, jalapeno & cucumber topped with spicy tuna) are on the menu!
The wine selection, as you can imagine given that it's a retail store, is extensive. You literally roam among the tables browsing the wine, and buy it at retail, not restaurant prices! The wine is organized by category instead of grape (luscious, soft, sweet and bubbly rather than cab, merlot, pinot, etc.). It's a little confusing at first, but once you start exploring it starts to make a lot of sense.
Most importantly, the service was spectacular. Our server, Jessica, was knowledgeable, very attentive, and sweet. We met one of the managers, Marie, who was very welcoming and helpful as well.
All in all this is our new favorite spot in Charlotte. Try it - you won't be disappointed - or broke!
