| - "Your workout is my warmup" that's the gimmick for Fit Factory Fitness (FFF).
With that being said, FFF is not for the faint of heart, but for individuals who are serious about working out and staying fit. They definitely welcome everyone, but all they ask is for your commitment and effort into making the workouts challenging for yourself.
The new FFF location at King and Spadina has been opened since November of 2014, but this afternoon was my first time dropping in to see the new space since I was in the neigbourhood.
After a quick walk up the stairs to the 2nd floor, I opened the entrance door to smiling faces and what a warm welcome I received from the reception for my first visit. It definitely makes going in for the first time less intimidating. Plus, lucky for me co-founder, Ivan was there to greet me and welcome me with a big hug.
Ivan was friendly and helpful as always and told me to take a look around, he also indicated they're planning to install a juice bar. That will definitely be a nice treat post workout.
My first impression was an absolute WOW! What a spacious space it was! Definitely much larger than the previous FFF location on Yonge/Wellesley and the place has a nice bright view overlooking King with floor to ceiling windows.
It was not the cramped space it was before, plus they even have a small lounge, an area dedicated for outdoor footwear and cubicle shelves for your belongings. Absolutely no street shoes allowed on the workout floor which is great as it makes for a cleaner workout area. Good for the clean freaks out there, like myself.
The place looks a bit industrialized with the large bussolo light fixtures, exposed pipes and support beams, but the track lighting makes it feel warm and the energy I felt while walking around was definitely a positive one. I can already envision myself in the new surrounding and working out here on a regular basis.
I didn't make it into the changing room since I never used it before at the old FFF location, so it didn't dawn on me to take a peek at the new location.
This location is definitely a little closer to me since in the past, I would run 3k to FFF, do a bootcamp workout and then somehow managed to run the 3k back home. Now the distance has been reduced by a kilometre for me, so am quite happy.
I've only done the bootcamp classes with Sgt. Tony Austin and the classes were definitely quite the intense workouts. Also, I got used to his shouting commands/instructions very quickly, but for first timers, it can be very intimidating. I have done fitness events with Tony, so I know he has a soft heart and can be quite comical at times. Tony's sense of timing is not your usual time because holding a position for the 30 seconds to a minute may seem longer than what was indicated. You have been warned!
In addition, never ever be tardy for his classes as he'll make you do pushups in front of the class. Yes, I was privy to doing 10 pushups when I was running a few minutes late once and it was definitely my last. Tony definitely operates like a sergeant on military punctual time, so arrive early! If you're more than 10 minutes late, they will not let you join the class, so don't show up late!
The workouts are HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), so be prepared to do as many drills as you can while maintaining proper form as Tony will call you out by name if he remembers it or come around to correct those who are not properly aligned while making everyone hold a position longer if one person is out of alignment.
I enjoyed the variety of the workouts as each class was always different and more challenging than the last. Classes were definitely not boring or repetitive, but always interesting and challenging.
There were times that I struggled through the classes as I was tired and sore, but as a fitness fanatic, I pushed myself mentally and physically and had their saying ingrained in my mind "I didn't show up to give up" and what a gimmick that was as it definitely helped me get through the classes with minimal swearing in my head at Tony and I'm a person who doesn't like vulgarity.
If you're already a pretty fit person, Tony's workouts will definitely try to drain you and test your mental and physical strength, but at the end you'll feel amazingly stronger and full of energy. For newbies looking for a different workout, challenge yourself to your limits and try FFF introductory offer for unlimited workouts for a month for $30. It'll definitely be worth your time and effort. And for that price, it's definitely a bargain!
I'm still in the midst of my running training schedule, so once that subsides in late spring, I'll definitely be looking forward to the workouts with Tony again. Plus, I will attempt to try the numerous other bootcamp classes available with Geoff and Roshanda and maybe even their boxing classes.
I will be ready to put in my 100%! Are you ready for a real workout?
