  • Andy B: Do you know what we call women who like whiskey? Female Customer next to her man: No what? Andy: Keepers Wednesday is Whiskey Wednesday. While Wednesday is the greatest night for drinking in downtown Champaign, what with half price drafts at Jupiter's, $1 off all 27 taps at Radio Maria, Blind Pig Brewery Mug Club, various specials at many other bars... one of the best deals is Whiskey Wednesday at Seven Saints IS one of the best reasons to go downtown. It's half price whiskey based on that weeks theme. Last night was Irish and International. You can remember the theme based on MIBS. M=micro American and Canadian. I = Irish and international. B=Bourbon. S=Scotch. If you want to try something new, if you want to try something expensive that you won't get anywhere else... go to whiskey Wednesday. Last night during I night, got a serving of the Jameson Rare. Normally $40, last night only $20. Shared with a friend, so my part was only $10. I can live with that. Started out with the special international whiskey. I have no idea what it was, but it was something I'd never heard of. The amazing Figgy was our server. He explained it to us several times, but still, I have no idea what all he said. Something about sherry, something about oak, something about bourbon. It sounded good. We got it. It was a very interesting whiskey (if it was whiskey). There were many, many, many things going on in it. There was sherry, there was oak, there was bourbon-y flavors. There was, sadly, too many things going on for me to fully LIKE it. I can appreciate it, but LIKE it is something else. It's actually Seven Saints fault that I even like whiskey at all! One night, a long time ago, kridz and I and several others (who pretty much all worked at saints) went up to The Stube in Gibson City. Kridz and I rode back with those crazy mooney boys, and we had them in to have a drink at the end. I busted out a bottle of Mikkeller Black, aged in bourbon barrels. I was pretty good with beer, but couldn't drink any whiskey. A couple of years before that, I was at a Crane Alley beer class (taught by the above Andy B) and he did bourbon one night. Skot, Paddy, and I were there. The first whiskey tasted like burning, the second tasted like fire, the third tasted like my mouth was numb... it's like that online story of the guy who had to do the Texas Chilli tasting thing... Paddy got all of Skot and my whiskey that night. Skot and I were sober, paddy was drunj. So, I'm drinking the Mikkeller Black with the Mooney's and I'm like what's that vanilla flavor in there, and the boys are like "that's the bourbon", and i'm like whaaaaaaa???? So the next week we went into Saints on bourbon Wednesday and I get something, and for the first time ever, It didn't taste like fire, it tasted like vanilla, with oak, with a little bit of syrup, and maybe some cotton candy. And that was a very expensive night. I like the sliders, I once got 3 sliders but instead of being served on a bun, they were served on a tortilla. I've never had a bad time here. I know people who say they have, and i'm not sure why they had a bad time. Sometimes it's busy. Sometimes the place is full. I'm friends with everyone (everywhere) so, I understand when I don't get the most attentive service. If the service may not be as personal as you might hope to get on a busy Friday or Saturday, don't go on a Friday or Saturday (Wednesday can be very busy as well). Go on a quiet evening (like sunday) sit at the bar, and ask questions. The staff here is some of the most educated on their products as you will find in a bar (period). They know what they are selling. If you have a question, they will answer it. If you ask them what they like (on a particular Wednesday) they will tell you what their favorite is, and they won't be mad about it (like I get when people ask me what my favorite is). The Monday night steak special is darn good too. The cheese curds are huge (yes, it's a lot of breading, but so what). Once, Andy put together a cheese curd/onion ring/chilli/cheese/diced onions/everything else fried plate that was super delicious. Like a deep fried casserole, with chilli. It's not on the menu, and don't try to get it when it's super busy.
