| - This is a true Farmer's Market if I've ever seen one. Honoring truly local businesses and farmers, this little market runs most Wednesdays. Let me try and break it down for you:
Over the summer and early fall(May-October), the Hillhurst Sunnyside outdoor market is held from 3-7 pm outside of the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Center. This year, they are trying out an indoor winter market from the first Wednesday of each month from November-May, at 4-7 pm inside the building.
I love this market. When it first started back up again a couple years ago, I would ride my bike over every Wednesday afternoon and take home some goodies. Most of the time for me this was produce, but on the odd occasion I would leave struggling to hold a wine bottle awkwardly while biking back up the hill home. Over the summer I tried to visit as often as I could, and it's so fabulous to see this market has grown. There are a large variety of vendors, from organic greenhouses, to local honeys, to wine and mead, ice cream, baked goods, and other gourmet food products. They focus greatly on focusing on local talent, and what I love here is that these are mostly small businesses getting their feet on the ground. What drives me up the wall about other Farmers Markets, is that sometimes there are already well established businesses that have set up shop for the long run, and it bums me out that someone else might not get the chance to showcase their product who could really use the positive exposure. They are also very supportive of buskers and there is most always music going. Complimentary booths are also available for non-profits.
I also love the events that this farmer's market has going on all the time. Last month they had a killer Harvest Market, and I'm pretty sure something awesome will probably happen during the holidays as well. Also, following each market during the winter, there are lectures on global sustainability and local food production. High fives Hillhurst Sunnyside Market for being cool.
