| - I try not to judge someone based on his or her looks. For example, when someone looks like a sleazy used car salesperson, I try to think maybe he just can't help the way he looks. In the case of Tony from Lake Norman Hyundai, though, that just isn't true. The slicked back, crunchy, highlighted blonde hair and ill-fitting business casual slacks and dress shirt are perfectly indicative of this man's character.
I spoke with Tony on the phone about selling him my used 2007 Mazda 3. He said he was interested and asked me to bring it in. After calling a couple more dealers, I spoke to a guy named Jay from Lake Norman Infiniti who said he was in charge of buying for both his and Tony's dealerships (same owner), so don't bother bringing the car to Hyundai. I called Tony to confirm, and he said that guy won't offer me a good a price as Tony, so just come to him. Since Tony could see me earlier in the day, I did just that
I get to the dealership and ask for Tony. He sends another man out to get some information from me and to ask for my keys. I wait to meet Tony. But, this man just walks right by me without even introducing himself or shaking my hand (perhaps because one hand had my keys and the other a cigarette...his hands were full). He walks outside, pokes and prods my car, then comes back in and, with a little jerk of his head, beckons me to come talk to him. He offers a good price and tries to get me to sell my car to him then and there. I couldn't do this because I needed the car for 2 more days, and I explained this to him on the phone to make sure I could delay the sale after an offer, which he said was fine on the phone. We come to an agreement that I'd come in over the next day or two, fill out paperwork, have a check written out, and then I'd drop the car off to pick up the check. I just needed to call him to confirm.
So, the next day arrives and I call his cell phone around 10am. No answer, so I leave a VM. 1pm, no return call, so I try the dealership, thinking maybe he doesn't check his cell during the day. I leave a message for him. 5pm rolls around, and I need to plan my next day, so I try the dealership again, and still no dice. 7:30pm, and I try again, he's with a client, he'll call me back. At this point, I feel like I'm being ignored. 8pm comes, the dealership closes, and after 4 messages, no return call from Tony.
10am the next day, still no return call. I call the dealership and demand to speak to him, explaining how I've left 4 messages now. He gets on the phone, and after some awkward silence when I explain who I am and some stumbling through his words, he offers some BS story about how, all of a sudden, there is a freeze on buying cars after a coworker of his bought 4 cars on the day I was there. (?)
Maybe if he didn't stumble so much, I'd believe him. Maybe if he had called me back and been forthright, I'd believe him. I'm aware he didn't have to buy my car. But don't ignore me. I need to get this car sold by the end of the week, you told me NOT to bring it to someone else (which I stupidly listened to), and then you just ignore me. For your inconsiderate practice and your rude demeanor, this dealership gets my first ever 1 star review (how exciting!).
PS: Most of the other workers there look just as sleazy as Tony (check out the pictures on the webpage if you don't believe me). So, beware, their behavior just might match their looks...they did for Tony! (Sorry...I couldn't help myself!)
