  • Because I'm a student on a budget, I don't get my hair done as often as I'd like to. I used to get it done by someone I know in my hometown, who did a good job, but my Aveda experience last week was honestly as good as it gets. First of all, I have long hair that goes past my chest. It's not thin, but not too thick either. When I phoned to book an appointment, the receptionist informed me that highlights were $50+. I was nervous about how much it would cost (based on the length of my hair, like any other salon) and was surprised to find it came out to just $50+ tax! Least amount of money I've ever spent on my hair, and it looks the best it ever has. I opted for a student. Risky move, I know, but I heard they consult teachers on every step. I don't understand why someone would pay triple what I did to get the exact same result, plus I like that I helped someone learn. Jacob was friendly and did exactly what I wanted! I'll admit, I was hoping to get full highlights and a trim on top of the highlights but didn't know ahead of time that 1) full highlights take 5 and a half hours at the institute; and 2) you have to schedule a cut, too. My hair hadn't been done for 10 months, so this was a bit of a disappointment, but my positive experience will definitely take me back soon! I had gotten just half-head highlights before, and didn't like the way they turned out but Jacob did an amazing job! They look so natural and suit me really well. While my highlights were setting, I received an AMAZING hand massage that almost put me to sleep in the chair. The one thing Jacob did forget, though, was my water (they ask you whether you want water, coffee or tea when you arrive) but I didn't say anything. I was a bit skeptical to purchase any of the products from the shop downstairs - but holy cow, my hair was so soft! I came home and researched to figure out which products would be best for me and went back and got the Smooth Shampoo & Conditioner, and the Brilliant heat damage spray. Like I said, I'm on a budget and have never, EVER spent $100 for three hair products... but I'm so glad I did. I can actually run my fingers through my hair. It's no longer frizzy, and the heat damage I once had is reversing. My hair used to require a wash once a day but, even with constantly touching it because I can't believe how soft it is, I now wash it every other day. Shampoo lathers really well, so I imagine the bottle will last me a long time. I'll actually be saving money on hair products since these will last longer than mine used to, plus my hair is healthier. Aveda is the best! (Oh, and if you're still REALLY nervous about letting a student touch your hair, the best time to go is between now and December. All the students that are working now are graduating in January, so they've had tons of hands-on experience in comparison to the new students you'll see in the first part of the new year.)
