  • I've been to the South End location at least 3 times and the one in Uptown twice. Man... I just need to stop going here. Every time I think "Maybe they will have a varietal that I'll like this time". I'm a black coffee guy... with as strong preference for earthy, nutty flavors. I've been spoiled by pour-over places like Philz and Blue Bottle in San Francisco for the past 3 years, but this place seriously needs to find a new roaster. They have a very strong preference for choosing "bright" coffees and the ones I've tried have either been roasted so light that they were practically still green (no sugar development at all) or WAY over-roasted so that any of the flavors that should have been there were sent up the chimney of the roaster. Today I saw "Nutty", "Earthy" and "Cocoa" on their drip coffee tasting notes and thought "YEA! My day has come!" Unfortunately, this was easily the worst cup of coffee I've had in months! Seriously... I'd take a coffee from McDonalds over this stuff... The tasting notes should have read "Predominant flavors of carbon with subtle notes of ash, metal filings and that odd taste you get when you lick both terminals of a 9-volt battery at the same time." I'll give 'em 2 stars, premarily because they have pleasant employees who seem to know their stuff and care about what they are doing... they are just horribly let down by the product they have to sell. I watched a barista draw a shot of espresso for another customer and he had good technique. The South End location is also a very pleasant place to sit outside... some great beer hall tables/benches and lovely landscaping. Maybe I should switch to an espresso drink if I need the vibe of this place on a nice morning... but it's a coffee joint. They should have good coffee. :( EDIT: +1 star for having an owner who keeps up on social media and replies politely (and trains / finds well educated, thoughtful staff).
