We dropped in after work on Friday night to grab a small bite and have a drink before heading over to the Holiday Marketplace in Market Square. We stumbled on Pirata and decided to walk their plank. I'll try not to work in too many pirate references but it will be hard.
The scurvy dog serving up tasty cocktails was not real friendly but I think they were pretty slammed before we arrived so maybe he was just worn out or perhaps incurred a serious keel hauling earlier. The drinks he made for us were really delicious. I tried the Man O War which is straight rum with some other booze over a huge ice cube so it's stronnnnnng like Cap'n Black's breath after three months at sea. Argh! My mate tried Meg's Peg Leg which was vodka, cuke flavoring, sage and thai spices which left her adrift.
We tried the pollo (that's chicken for ye English landlubbers) fricassee empanada with a spicy red sauce on the side that was quite delicious and the lechon pork and corn tacos which were not as successful. In both tacos, there was a very large (bigger than a grape) hunk of pure pork fat. It was really not good. The pork itself was very bland and the corn and other taco toppings were no help in the taste department. I pointed out the huge hunks of fat to the bartender when he stopped by to collect our plates and he just shrugged and said, "oh." No apologies. No questions. It was a little off-putting as far as responses go when you bring something to a restaurant's attention.
They have only been open five weeks so let's hope their Quartermaster picks up their game in the food department. Their drinks can float my armada any day.
