| - WOW! Talk about food-gasms! Tucked away in the far left corner of chinatown, this restaurant is a hidden gem among the many asian establishments on Spring Mountain Road. It seems like they have everything here in terms of Japanese cuisine! What initially attracted me to this restaurant is that their menu is very unique. I can promise you that you won't find many of the dishes here at other establishments. Prices are affordable and realistically reflect the quality/quantity of food that you are getting. I love the authentic atmosphere of the restaurant. It feels almost like you just walked into a restaurant in Japan! The entire staff are very courteous and polite which only adds to the restaurant's ambience. I must have seen the waiters/chefs bow their heads seven or eight times to other guests throughout my entire meal. I also love how they have a large dining area in the center of the restaurant where there are no chairs available and guests dine by kneeling on cushions laid on the floor (just like in Japan!). My brother and I were feeling adventurous tonight so these are what we ordered:
1. Sea urchin dumpling: Fish cake with some sea urchin on top, wrapped into a dumpling; steamed. Creamy. Tastes great with their signature soy sauce. My only complaint with this dish, of course, is: it could use more sea urchin.
2. Chutoro: Simply fresh & delicious. A bit fatty but much leaner than otoro.
3. Ocean trout sashimi: Reminds me of salmon, tastes like salmon...but it is not salmon.
4. Ankimo Ponzu (steamed monkfish liver with ponzu sauce): Light, creamy, a bit salty. Not as earthy as you'd expect from your regular liver.
5. Beef Tataki (beef sashimi with ponzu sauce): This dish was a bit disappointing because we were expecting raw beef but instead we got over-seared meat. Still good, but could be better. Make sure you let your server know that you're expecting sashimi style.
6. Tako Wasa (raw octopus marinated with wasabi): This dish surprised me! The spiciness of the wasabi really enhanced the flavor of the octopus. It is not as slimy as I expected (which is only a good thing).
7. Sea urchin sashimi on wooden tray: Don't let the picture fool you, there's not THAT much sea urchin because the sea urchin are thinly sliced. It is definitely the go-to dish if you need a little sea urchin fix. Sweet & creamy in flavor.
8. Vanilla ice cream: We got it for free by checking in to Facebook. Definitely the best vanilla ice cream that I've ever had. No joke. Rich & creamy, reminds me of Haagen Dazs ice cream, except much... much better.
