| - Exceptionally disappointing. Went in for the first time at 9 AM on Tuesday morning, the donut shop was completely empty, and employees were mopping the floor. I ordered two donuts, an old fashion and a blueberry streusel, and a cup of coffee.
I understand that hurts donut is not a coffee shop, and so my expectations were low at least for the cup of Joe. The coffee is self serve, and it was completely out when I went over to get a cup. The employees, we're very nice, brought out a fresh pot of coffee, at least one that I thought was fresh. However, the brunt sludge that came out of the airpot was some of the worst coffee that I have ever had.
Now, onto the donuts: Hertz has about a dozen flavors, which consist of gratuitous toppings on what could be described as a fairly dry raised donut base. If I were five or six years old, the fruity pebbles might be appealing, but once you get past the surface most of the doughnuts are the same blah raised doughnut.
The Blueberry Streusel was better, for sure, which earns Hurts an extra star. The doughnut was still on the dry side, but the streusel on top was a nice touch.
Doughnuts are generously portioned - again, appealing to the five or six year old crowd - but the extra size just gets you more of the same, overly sweet, cheap sugar cereal covered doughnut.
The store itself is a little strange. I'm not sure what's upstairs, but the main floor has the feeling of not enough furniture for the space. Big, open, tile covered (and wet) floor leads you to the bakery counter and cash registers. I guess they must see a lot more traffic on the weekends and try to keep the space open for a long line, but it wasn't a spot that made me want to hang out and drink a coffee. Which was a good thing, because the coffee was undrinkable.
