| - I'll first start off by saying this is my first apartment, and it has not been a pleasant experience to say the least.
What initially drew me into the apartment was the aesthetic; the gray wood floors, dark brown cabinets...absolutely beautiful, in the model home. In reality, the appeal of these things is only superficial to get you into the apartment as the actual quality of the apartment is average. 80 on Gibson does claim to be a "luxury" apartment, but the term is used so frequently by apartment complexes that it doesn't really mean anything. If anything, it would only give them an excuse to charge you more for things.
For review purposes, I live in an upstairs apartment. The difference between the upstairs and downstairs apartments is that the upstairs apartments have carpet in the living room and vaulted ceilings while the downstairs do not. Let's talk move in day. Absolutely horrendous. The carpets were filthy and obviously not cleaned or shampooed; the carpet had and still has red stains that I can't get out. There was a melted glob of what looked like red crayon. The bathroom door has a chunk missing on the top. The bathroom door frame looked like it had been chewed by a dog. When the maintenance guy came to "fix" it, he had cut the chewed part off and glued a piece of a door frame of a different width on instead of just replacing the entire door frame to make it look nice or at least ordering a part of the SAME width. There were also animal crackers in the vent. When I had told the maintenance guy that I guess the people before me had kids, he responded with, "Oh, because of the animal crackers in the vent?" So...you knew there were crackers in the vent, but you left them there? Nice. When they got a cleaning guy to come in after I've already moved in, he took the scented oil plugin that I had in the wall, took it out, and turned it upside down which resulted in the oil leaking over $50 worth of stuff I had in the bathroom and ruining it. If you couldn't clean the rest of the apartment properly, why was taking something out of the outlet a priority? At that point I had him leave because I didn't want him touching anything else.
Now, they claim the carpet in the upstairs apartment is for insulation; however, the walls and floors are so thin that you can practically hear everything. The quality is just shy of being cardboard. I have two dogs, and when I got them, my downstairs neighbor started complaining about them playing and barking. She complained as if the noise was coming from an IMAX theater which ultimately drove us both nuts. She would even complain and bang if I vacuumed. So if you're looking for an apartment with noise insulation, this is not the apartment for you. Also, when it's windy, you can hear the wind whistling through the doors and windows which makes it much less efficient at trying to heat or cool the apartment.
Onto the dogs. When I got the dogs a few months ago, I asked how much it would be for everything. The guy in the office told me it would be a $300 pet deposit plus $25 monthly for rent. I recently got a letter saying that since I have 2 dogs that I would need to pay another $100 for the deposit and another $10 for pet rent. When I had called and asked for clarification since I had already spoken to someone months ago about my pets, she said that they're trying to get things in order and that it's actually $25 extra a month for rent when my note from the manager says $10. When I told her this, she still said it's $25.This management office does NOT communicate effectively with each other and the manager didn't even know most of the issues I had with the apartment. If you decide to move in, you need to make note of everything because their office and team are disorganized. So yeah let me just pull this extra money out of nowhere because you decide all of a sudden to attempt to get organized.
While it's been anything but "luxurious" living here, I will point out some good qualities of the apartment:
- Dog park: The size of the dog park is actually pretty big for an apartment complex; a lot bigger than other dog parks I've seen.
- Safe, quiet neighborhood: While the apartment is not gated, it's safe enough for many people to leave their doors and windows open. Other than occasional dog barking, it's pretty quiet, especially at night.
- Management: While I've definitely had issues with management not following up and delivering information, each person I've spoken to is very nice. They just need to work on communication and organization so other people don't have the same negative experiences I've had.
Note: One reviewer did say her apartment looked perfect on move in day and like the model one she saw. I don't doubt that some of the apartments are beautiful. Just in my case, I got a bad apartment unfortunately. I wasn't able to see my apartment before the deal was done, so just keep that in mind if you're considering this place; could be hit or miss.
