| - Decided to make reservations for x4 on a Saturday night to try something new w/ family visiting from out of state. Upon walking in, the exposed rafters and rustic yet contemporary feel made this native Arizonan feel right at home. Beckets did a phenomenol job w/ the atmosphere-- pleasant unintrusive music in the background with a din comfortable for dinner conversation. Tables were nicely spaced apart-- not overly crowded. Our server was fine and the Iced Tea delicious. We ordered the Brussel sprouts-- the portion really only shareable between x2 people was underwhelming. They were poorly cooked-- still raw and could not be cut with a butter knife. We were forced to fork then gnaw. It seemed that they doused raw Brussels sprouts in vinegar, par baked bacon and threw them straight under a broiler. There were slimy pieces of bacon under the Brussel sprouts w/ a couple of pieces (I think bacon) that were burnt to the extent of being unrecognizable on the top. No one went back for a second bite.
We had some dinner rolls (menu:"requested bread") that were not notable and ordered the cheddar/bacon biscuits. THESE WERE OUT OF THIS WORLD. The best drop biscuits I've had anywhere.
For entrees I had the pei mussels w/ salami, saffron rice and tomatoes. While a healthy portion, these were unacceptable. There was no salami, the tomatoes tasted like a tired jarred tomato sauce, the saffron undetectable and after counting x5 unopened mussels in the dish I was nervous to continue as I lost confidence that the cook understood how to serve them safely/appropriately. My server did not come by to check on us re: entrees and someone else came to swiftly clear our plates. My friends/family had the cheeseburger (thin patties x2 not cooked to order), short rib (tried a bite, good flavor but slightly tough and dry), and the chicken skillet (per husband, super greasy).
Given our great luck with the biscuits and being still hungry, as only one of us actually ate their entree, we shared the pecan/fig pie ala mode. The pie was balanced, not overly sweet and my friend was in LOVE with the ice cream.
I thought about possibly x2 stars given that there were a couple top notes to this dining experience.... but ultimately I had x2 dishes that were inedible. Given Beckets reputation and the other glowing reviews I found this dining experience to be incredibly disappointing. We didn't feel comfortable letting our friends/family split the bill as we felt responsible for deciding to come here. Given the rest of the largely positive reviews, maybe we caught them on a really bad night?
