There are restaurants and then there are restaurants. This is a restaurant with a capital R. To put this in perspective I think that our total bill was close to $500. With that in mind the expectations are very high for the Nobuo and it does not disappoint. This is very much so a special event restaurant. We had the chef's choice menu with the wine paired and it was fantastic. The setting is intimate and the service was awesome. I have only been here once and am not sure when I would go here again but that is not for a lack of desire to go. As you would expect with this type of restaurant each of the courses were small so don't come hungry. I would recommend a beer and the scotch eggs at the pub next door before starting your dinner here. I am not enough of a foodie to be snobby about wine pairings or detect the subtle nuances of one pairing vs. another in order to enhance my experience. That said, this was the first time where I felt like I could appreciate the complimentary notes of a particular wine with a dish.
Not being a nuanced person I only noticed this at the extremes, for example for one course they brought out a wine that could be described as skunky on its own but once the course arrive of bitter Brussel sprouts with balsamic the pairing was memorable. The other courses mostly my opinion was that I was drinking a good wine with good food. But that one course with what seemed to be an odd wine flavor tells me, the layperson, that they're doing something right and are presenting an experience that I will not get elsewhere. Absolutely fantastic and I love what they do. I hope some day to be back.
