| - I am going to start with full disclosure. I knew the original owners when they built this gym. Needless to say, I have been climbing here for a long time. I will, however, try to be as objective as I can be with this review. I have been to all three gyms that currently exist in Las Vegas. I like R2C2 the best. Nevada Climbing Center is primarily a top rope gym. The newest gym, Refuge, is completely a bouldering gym and does not have a rope in the place. I don't understand why some reviewers have said that the gym is dirty. It has always been clean when I go in there. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There is no cost to get belay certified, and the use of gri gri's is free. New routes are put up every week. This is done during off peak hours so as not to disrupt climbing during busy times. Climbers there are friendly without being intrusive. There are four auto belays with routes rating from 5.5 to 5.11 for times when I don't have a partner to belay me. That is huge when I want to get a work out in, but can't find a friend to go. No other gym in town has auto belays. Yes, sometimes there are a lot of kids in the gym. Thursday nights from 4:30 to 6:30 is one of those times. My kid is one of them. She loves to climb and hang out with other kids her age who love climbing as well. If you don't want to be around kids, don't go during this time. Many of the regular climbers, including myself, would much rather be outdoors climbing. Consequently, the gym is usually not very busy on weekends with nice weather. If you want a time with fewer climbers in the gym, go on a weekend morning.
