| - I am a cupcake/baked goods aficionado. I love to bake and I LOVE to eat treats prepared at restaurants or specialty shops like Sprinkles.
I had never had one of these cupcakes before, but I have seen the owner on a TV show and ever since then I've been salivating. So when my hubby and I noticed a section of The Strip we'd never walked down before, and that they had a Sprinkles shop down the way, I was thrilled.
THRILLED.
The shop itself is small and quaint, clean and streamlined. They have several flavors of cupcakes on display and more flavors listed on the sign behind the counter. I am so into salted caramel right now that my heart knew immediately which flavor I was going to indulge in. My husband tried the red velvet, because red velvet is a flavor that makes comparisons very easy between brands, etc.
(For one thing, traditional red velvet has a hint of CHOCOLATE flavor, not cardboard. Also, traditionally it is paired with a cream cheese frosting, not cardboard flavored frosting. Not sure why, but tons of places, even fancy shmancy restaurants, screw this up. It is so basic that it blows my mind how many times people simply get it wrong. It's red because cocoa powder used to go through some sort of chemical reaction during baking that turned it red, back in the days before stabilization, etc. Now you know. Red velvet should taste like chocolate, darnit!)
Anywho. Now that my blood pressure is back to normal, I must say I was happy with our cupcakes. They look very processed at a glance, however they claim they are made from scratch daily. The frosting did taste strongly of powdered sugar to me, but it was a wonderful, smooth texture. The cake was moist, but not overly flavorful, which is what my mind had imagined. At $3.25 or so per cupcake, it was about as good as what I had expected. I was surprised, actually, that they weren't more expensive. Pleasantly surprised.
So, if you were to offer me a tray loaded with free Sprinkles cupcakes, I would snatch it from your bony grip and cower away into a corner to eat in private, peeking over my shoulder every now and then with a low guttural growl to ensure no one is approaching.
However, if you tried to get me to buy one from you for a few bucks, I'd probably pass. Unless I was stressed, then no price is too high. Am I right? Ehhhhhh...yeah. I'm so right.
Overall, I recommend to people who are stressed. If you are of the "French Macaron or nothing!" mindset, then move along; You probably won't be impressed. Just saying.
