  • VERY IMPRESSIVE! I was so honored to be able to visit this Civil War Monument because it is truly something to behold. How appropriate that this monument, (topped by the Goddess of liberty), opened on Independence Day in 1894! The large granite monument is located at the center of Public Square in downtown Cleveland where it cannot be missed. It quickly became the point of reference for us finding our way around the city. It had to be our first stop as we set out to explore some of the local landmarks and historical structures. On the exterior of the monument are depictions (various scenes), of the four branches of the Union Army captured in bronze. As you move inside, you will see the names of the 9,000 soldiers and sailors (from Cuyahoga County), who served in the Union Army during the civil war. Just pause and reflect on that number as you think about the fact that many of the enlisted were just kids. Inside the monument as you gaze upward, you will see sculptures depicting key events such as the emancipation of the slaves, the beginning of the war in Ohio and the end of the war along with officers who were killed during the conflict. It is quite impressive and the one monument that you do not want to miss! To those individuals staffing monuments: I appreciate your giving me general information and then allowing me to go on my way. Please don't try to engage me in a prolonged conversation as I am exploring the monument because that is not the purpose of my visit. For me and many others, this is a somber moment to be observed in silence and is no different than visiting a cemetery. I am visiting to pay my respects and I would appreciate your allowing me to do so in peace. Thank you. ***Visiting this monument will cost you nothing because it is free!
