  • I had never been to a House of Blues. We drove up to Cleveland from Pittsburgh to see Brandi Carlile. Whenever she tours in Pittsburgh she plays local venues that tend to be great places to see a show. As soon as I walked into the HOB I had my doubts. It was like a Planet Hollywood threw up all over the place. I had major doubts about the set up of this venue. It is like a shoe box. There is a pit in front of the stage and then more standing room in the back by the bars (yes BARS, 2 of them to be exact, more on that later). The second tier dipped in a weird way so if you were standing in the back you felt like you were in a dungeon or basement. The acoustics were awful. They piped everything through speakers so instead of hearing actual music you hear the speaker recreation of music unless you are "lucky" enough to get a spot in the pit. I hate standing room only venues because there is always some idiot who thinks s/he and their group of 8 giants can squeeze in front of you. By the mid point of the show (which was awesome, Brandi Carlile is amazing regardless of the crappy venue) most of the audience was totally trashed (2 bars one small venue) there were three women behind me who were so wasted they were having trouble standing up. There was a group of three in front of me that had one girl who started wildly flailing her fists about when she decided to tell her boyfriend random stories and she ended up hitting not just me but also a middle aged woman standing next to me. I have never had so much beer spilled on my person by total strangers with no regard to the fact that they were spilling their drinks everywhere. During the very last song of the set an honest to god brawl broke out up near the front between some of the patrons. Cleveland, you seem like a nice city but your residents are sloppy drunks. Honestly, HOB should set some kind of drink limit because everyone there who had been drinking was sloppy. I hated this venue and will never come back. Acoustics were awful, it was so commercial it was sickening, the crowd was generally awful. I didn't partake in the food or drink so I can't comment on that but as a venue for concerts I recommend NEVER going there unless it is to see someone you absolutely love.
