  • I came in town for Charlotte Restaurant Week and was completely disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. After drooling over the pictures on the website, I was so excited to try this place. My friend and I were sat immediately, but were taken to a tiny tot table floating awkwardly in the middle of the dining room. We had to ask the hostess to move us to one of the other six empty tables where we wouldn't feel like we were on display. Our server, let's call him Grumps because he never actually introduced himself to us, automatically assumed that we wanted the preset menu without asking. He missed an opportunity to introduce us to the regular menu, did not inquire if we wanted cocktails, or anything outside of the complimentary red or white. He acted as if it was a chore to serve us, and kept this attitude up all evening. Now on to the food. To start my friend had the fried green tomatoes, bland is a great description for this, in fact bland could be used to describe everything we ate except for the pork belly and one dessert. For entrees we had the pan fried chicken and the shrimp and grits. The chicken was the better entree, as the shrimp had no seasoning at all. For dessert, we had the pound cake and beignets. The pound cake was probably the best thing we had all night, the beignets were more like hot fried balls of dough-more akin to a hush puppy or blob of funnel cake than a beignet. Grumps continued to make us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I hate that I wasted an opportunity to eat at a great restaurant by eating at New South Kitchen.
