| - One of the greatest memories of my childhood was waking up in the morning to Papa Jack's (my grandfather) Nova lox sandwich. Those precious visits to my grandparents Flushing, Queens (NYC) apartment forever left me a fan of Nova lox. Now in my middle ages, I appear to be one of the few Nova lox fans in Las Vegas. Across the continent from Queens where Nova lox reigns supreme in the sundry of bagel bakeries, it is an anomaly in Las Vegas. The only mom & pop bagel bakeries that I am aware of serving outstanding Nova lox sandwiches is the Bagel Cafe. On account of the fact that the Bagel Cafe is a long drive from my residence, I am relegated to patronize a chain to satisfy my craving for the Nova lox sandwich. That chain is Einstein Bros.
It is apparent to me that Einstein Bros Bagels is doing far better than mom & pop bagel bakeries in Las Vegas. They keep building new locations, like this one that opened a couple of years ago. Despite the low ratings on Yelp, it is a jumping location. Every time that I have been here, people have lined up for bagels. That includes me.
I usually stop by this location when I am doing something in the southwest valley (usually visiting a park) or entering Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area via Blue Diamond Road (Route 160). Headed into the parking lot from westbound Blue Diamond Road, a protected left turn signal provides a safe turn into the parking lot. It is a parking lot joining to a 99 Cents Store, McDonald's, Chipotle, and numerous shops. With Chipotle closed in the early morning, I use their parking area as an overflow parking lot. Now, if I did not want to park my car, there is the option of using the drive thru.
If you have not been to Einstein Bros, this is how the order system works. First you order and give your name at one register. Second, past the bagel case you pay at the second register. Third, a few minutes later the employee will deliver the food to the table. Upon the second stage, an employee will present you with a cup for the coffee or cold beverage.
I am fond of Einstein Bros bottomless coffee. The flavorful coffee is one advantage that Einstein Bros has over the New York mom & pop bagel bakeries. I never recall flavorful coffee in a mom & pop bagel bakery. For the record I had the worst coffee ever in a Fort Lauderdale (FL) bagel bakery. After Einstein Bros left New York after a few months in business, the coffee left a lasting impression. Einstein Bros customarily features four flavors of self serve coffee. The only problem with the bottomless coffee is that I become so comfortable sitting on a chair drinking coffee while watching You Tube on their WiFi with my smartphone plugged into an outlet. It is a problem because it cuts into the time I would be spending in the park.
Speaking of comfortable, this is far from a roomy restaurant. There are a few tables and a long common bar table. Fortunately I never had an issue finding a seat.
And speaking of comfortable, I have enjoyed the breakfast comfort food that my taste buds are so fond of. On the majority of the breakfasts, I have spent $5 and change on a poppy seed bagel with salmon schmear and small bottomless coffee. This is a value breakfast on days that I intend to later dine in a casual dining restaurant or am just not too hungry. Now yesterday in a "you live once" mood, I splurged on a poppy seed bagel with Nova lox, side of potato salad, and small cup of bottomless coffee. After tax this comes out to $10.70. After taking a bite there is no monetary value delighting in Nova lox, cream cheese, onions, and tomato between a hot toasted poppy seed bagel. I try to extend this morning delight by pausing to enjoy the delectable potato salad. Although the New York mom and pop bagel bakeries and Bagel Cafe serve superior Nova lox sandwiches to Einstein Bagels comparing them would be like comparing apples to oranges when they are far away.
With a scarcity of mom & pop bagel bakeries in Las Vegas, my option is to visit a chain to savor the delicious Nova lox sandwiches that Papa Jack made me in the morning. It doesn't take an Einstein to figure out that I am a fan.
