| - My car did not pass the smog inspection so I took it to my mechanic, Tom. He informs me that my catalytic converter is completely shot (no surprise at 160,000 miles). When I ask how much he thinks it will be, he painfully says it will be around $2000. I sigh and tell him to go ahead and ask him when he can do the work. He calls the part store to find out how much and when. After he hangs up he tells me, "It will be more like $1500 instead of $2000." Feeling a wee bit better, I scheduled it for yesterday. Middle of the day yesterday he calls me and says it turns out that the cost is actually around $1200 and asks if I would like him to just go ahead and drive it to a smog check station for me so I do not have to do it later. And oh, by the way, since he knows the bill is quite a chunk of change he offers to let me split the payment in half and pay the rest next month. "Just call me in a few weeks and you can take care of the other half." LAST part of this miracle story, I needed my air filter cover clips replaced. Toyota said it would be $600. Tom tells me he has a friend who works at a junk yard, so he will just pick one up for me there. The moral of this story... "Yes, Debi, there is such a thing as an honest mechanic! His name is Tom and he owns Catskill Motors!" Call him if you EVER need car work done. And tell him Debi R. sent ya!
