  • I had been vomiting for 3 days due to food poisoning and was extremely dehydrated the night before my wedding. Trying to be financially responsible, my husband took me to the local Dignity Health urgent care instead of an ER. However, what I walked away with was an ER bill with a lot of over-the-top markups for a very straightforward diagnosis. I ended up getting charged a total of $1,477 for some IV fluids and a couple of drugs. On top of this, none of it was covered by my insurance, so I am paying out of pocket. I understand that Dignity Health doesn't exactly get paid the full amount when insurance pays them, so that's why the prices are so high, but that doesn't make it okay to screw the rest of us. In fact, according to the NIH in 2013, the average ER bill is $1,233, and I paid MORE than that for a very straightforward diagnosis at an URGENT CARE. I specifically went to an urgent care to avoid the markups associated with an ER, but did not realize how corrupt the Dignity Health system is as far as trying to inflate costs to the highest degree. For example, I was charged $500 for IV Therapy, which means they had to start and hang an IV on a pole and watch me sit there for 30 minutes. Had I known that, I would have gone to Viva IV therapy in Scottsdale, where I can get IV fluids for $80, including the cost of care AND the saline solution. I was charged $48 for an 8MG dose of ONDANSETRON aka Zofran, which costs $10 for 30 4MG tablets on GoodRx, so $0.66 per 8 MG dose. I was charged $96 for 20MG of FAMOTIDINE, aka Pepcid AC, which costs $4.00 for 50 tablets over the counter. $141 for a standard over-the-counter pregnancy test, when I could pee on a stick from the store for $7. The list goes on... I can absolutely say that I will never again be using the Dignity Health network, as the charges imposed are absolutely ridiculous for a responsible consumer who is in need of healthcare.
