  • Typically we use Alamo and National but went with Thrifty for the very first time through AAA. Renting a car can be frustrating and we have had issues in the past with many companies and we have had rentals that have gone very smoothly. This was the worst rental experience we have had and we have rented over 100 times. There were no cars available. We waited 30 minutes and asked about a Dodge Charger. We were told it would be $50 extra (later found out that should have been a full size car and not charged an upgrade). At this point I did not care and said we would take it. Upon inspection it was filthy and had spilled coffee in it and a lot of damage. We declined it and waited another 30 minutes when a rep walked over and asked, "What is your problem was now"? We told her we do not have a car. She told us to take a Maxima and I told her I was not paying for an upgrade because they were out of cars. She told me we would not pay and to take the car or wait at least another hour. We took they car and got into the long check out line where we explained the situation. We were assured we would not be charged. When we returned home we saw the $50 charge. We called customer service where we were treated rudely and called a liar. We asked for a supervisor and were told there are not any.... shocking. The Maxima... over two years old with 58,000 miles on it. Banged up, dirty and without any options... premium? Hardly. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Thrifty/Dollar and Hertz. In the end they could care less about your business and as the lot attendant told us... "Hertz is all about greed and profit they don't care about nothin' else". Exact words. She said a lot more and it was a real education for us. It certainly helped us to understand why they are so poor. These are the folks that work for them.... and the people you need to deal with. I will gladly pay National and Alamo an extra $25 per trip. They are not perfect but our chances are way better with them. Best wishes fellow travelers. :-) Larry
