| - I am rarely at a loss for words and am normally excited about writing reviews, but I really struggled with this particular one.
I really wanted to like this place!
But like my uncomfortable experiences reprimanding a good employee for making an uncharacteristic decision, or scolding one of my children for using words unbecoming of them - this is a review that I do not relish writing.
However, as it has been often said, the show must go on! So here it is...
We were at the Oriental Grocery store across the street when we spotted this Vietnamese Restaurant. Actually, I spotted the Angry Crab, and my wife spotted Pholicious.
Angry Crab on a Friday is a dreadfully long wait, and we were both famished. So, Vietnamese it was going to be this evening!
The interior of this place is very basic. No frills, whatsoever, but we never do mind as long as the food is good.
Unfortunately, our 2 star rating indicates that it was below par, and here are the reasons why:
1) The Pho Tai, although generous in its size and portions, was comprised of what appeared to be frozen, thin pieces of some type of artificial meat that did not taste like beef.
Typically, real beef is used, and is stewed in the broth for a prolonged period of time. That is what gives this soup its flavor. However, when I saw the very thin and evenly square pieces of beef contained within the soup, I knew that something was amiss. And when I tasted the beef, it was devoid of any familiar beef taste.
2) The Pork Chop with Over Easy Egg and White Rice was also suspect. The pork chop had good enough flavor comparable to a Korean BBQ dish, but it was so thin and had so much bone-in that it definitely evoked cheapness and low quality. This pork chop was nearly as thin as the beef that was in the Pho Tai.
3) The Curry was sweet, but lacked consistency.
4) The Egg Roll was overcooked, which resulted in the wrapping being as hard as a rock. It was so hot, that even after waiting a few minutes, it was still blistering.
The only redeeming quality was that their service is very quick (Now I know why!), and they are very friendly.
Otherwise, this is definitely not a place that we will be returning to, unless they make improvements to the quality of their food.
