I've been to the Hubbard Avenue Diner a couple of times and I honestly do not understand the attraction. Both times were mid- morning during the week, the place was very busy, the service was slow and the food was mediocre.
On our first visit m wife ordered bacon "crispy" and it came out burnt. So burnt that when we tapped it on the plate in front of the waitress pieces cracked off. The waitress was noticeably embarrassed and offer to replace it and we told her not to bother; but she felt compelled and brought some out anyway; however, it came after we were done eating.
Our most recent visit was very similar to our first visit. The service was extremely slow; it took about 30 minutes to get our breakfast. The waitress stopped twice to tell us our breakfast was coming soon but it took about 10 minutes after the last "coming soon" comment. My wife ordered eggs over medium which generally means they are not runny but the yoke isn't cooked solid. Unfortunately over medium to the cook meant one egg was cooked hard with no yoke and the other had a minimal amount of yoke. I ordered the "Mile High" aka Denver Omelet with hash browns. They must have had an over abundance of green pepper or a shortage of ham and onion in the kitchen because it was pretty much a green pepper omelet with a little ham and onion. To top it off the green pepper was still very crunchy. They must have also been running short of hash browns because the serving size on my plate was far less then my wife received.
Now for the table next to us. The diner serves all of their breakfasts with biscuits unless you request otherwise. Well the table next to us requested wheat toast instead of biscuits and he received biscuits. He pointed out the error to the waitress and she replaced the biscuits with toast but they were almost done eating by the time the toast arrived.
I've had their pies at work functions and they are an average of 3.5 stars. The plus is they have a huge selection and some of them are 4+ stars so you can probably find one you really love.
