| - Initially I was excited for Emerald City, it seemed more like an LGBT bar for those a bit beyond the undergrad dancing days, more for late, late 20s, 30s and up professionals in the community. And my first impression was just that. It was relaxed, the staff were friendly, drinks were creative and delicious. I was able to sit and talk with people while enjoying a drink. Sadly much has changed upon more recent visits.
However, the multiple times I've come back with friends it has continually gone downhill. I've sat with minimal interaction from staff despite spending quite a bit of money (and I've always believed they were overpriced but previously overlooked this enjoying the relaxed environment).
The music has gotten louder and louder each time, I can never have a conversation with people I'm sitting next too. Not only has the music gotten louder, it gets campier time and time again. I fear that it is changing to try and steal some of the C-Street dancing crowd. I go to a bar/lounge to..well lounge and know my peers more intimately, Emerald no longer cultivates that atmosphere and I would rather spend my money and time at Boltini's which has more options, is LGBT friendly, and is more fairly priced. It is a shame CU is back to offering nothing for the LGBT adults in the community other than non-gay bar atmospheres.
I will concur with what a previous reviewer said, when I've been there when the owners were there, they all but ignored most of the guests except the patrons it was clear they knew well. I have stopped recommending it as a place for my peers and I to go. Its a shame, I had high hopes for it and had a great few first impressions earlier in its lifespan. The rest of staff have also been less welcoming, accommodating.
Perhaps I'm just not gay enough to understand why I would go here over some of the other downtown bars. Maybe its a cool place if you like to be a queen and see drag shows?
