  • The Prayers from Maria Foundation honors a local little girl who sadly passed away from a rare cancer. Each year, they curate a field of sunflowers to gracefully draw attention to the lack of funding for childhood cancer. As their website says, "The field was inspired by the memory and spirit of Maria McNamara, planted as a way to love and honor the courageous children who are battling cancer and those we have lost." Depending on the weather, the sunflowers are typically in bloom from late summer to the early start of fall. Admission is free. You can enter at your own will, but they collect donations (which I highly recommend). The fields extend as far as the eye can see and many of the sunflowers are tagged with memorial tags and handwritten messages. They also have informative signs about childhood cancer throughout the field. The grounds are beautifully maintained. But for real though, if you're bringing children, please encourage them to be respectful of the sunflowers. I was having visceral reactions to the ill-behavior around me. The field itself is a wonderful way to pay homage to remember little ones affected by childhood cancer or honor existing warriors. It's highly emotional, powerful and thought-provoking. Bring your camera and take a moment to explore this beautiful field.
