I came in for a bleeding nose. Without taking a culture of my nasal discharge to see if I had a bacterial or viral infection, the physician's assistant prescribed an antibiotic which I did not fill because I did not know if I even had an infection. Over use of unwarranted and unnecessary antibiotics can cause a worse problem of bacterial antibiotic resistance, and antibiotics do not have an effect on viral infections. As it turned out, the cause of the bleeding was the dry Nevada air I was not accustomed to as I was visiting from the Midwest and the problem resolved itself quickly by my own decision to try saline nasal spray I purchased over the counter. The worst audacity is that I was quoted by telephone before I made the decision to come into this facility for treatment a fee of $145.00, however when the bill came by mail to me some time after the visit, I was charged $225.00. I called the facility and was now told that the $145.00 was their starting fee for a "simple medical issue" but that my issue was "complex". I asked what they meant by "complex", and was told that it involved things like tests and x-rays. I did not have tests or x-rays and asked to speak to a supervisor. I was transferred to Ross Kurtz who told me that he would send my case back to the facility for review. The review results was that their documentation supported their initial determination that my medical issue was complex and that their billing coding was correct. I then emailed Ross Kurtz requesting that he send me copies of their documentation which supports their determination that my medical issue was complex, and that he send me their billing code used in my case with an explanation of same, but he has failed to respond. The amount this facility charged me is more than a physician or a hospital emergency room would charge and I would have been seen by a licensed medical doctor instead of a physician's assistant and I would have been given the requisite testing necessary and proper to determine the real cause of my nose bleed.
