Did you know there was Dunkin' Donuts downtown?? I didn't !!!
That sure was a nice surprise! I haven't had any in years, since only a handful exist in Montreal.
In the 1990s, my dad used to buy us a dozen of different colourful, creamy, glistening donuts right after each visit to the dentist (not sure doctor would approve). So I guess Dunkin's is somewhat of an generational thing? I mean, I was a sugar-loving kid in the golden years of American fast food, when McDonalds and Dunkin' were king and queen of our local strip mall. The sweet, persistent smell of those donuts alone could make me salivate. Imagine my delight when we randomly saw that small Dunkin' counter in Place Ville-Marie! We immediately each got a donut and a coffee. Their vanilla cream filling is still outrageously fake, and I love it (the secret's in the shortening).
Obviously, Dunkin' will never compete at the level of independent bakeries and pastry shops. But in the category of industrial donuts, they are still supreme in my heart :D
