| - I wanted a salad (something healthy) but was worried I'd have to eat in the car due to needing to get to an appointment. I googled "best sandwiches phoenix" and Bertha's came up #2 I think. It was on my way to an appointment so I made the drive, pulled into the lot and wondered what type of placer this'd be since it's in an unlikely shopping plaza that I have driven by countless times, yet never noticed Bertha's wedged int he corner.
It was straight up noon and the line was to the door. It's a small place, counter type service but the line moved quickly. The counter people were helpful guiding you through the ordeing process with offers of Lunch Combo, a side, dessert...
I ordered an unlikely pairing of asparagus and sandwich. No, not a sammy with a side of asparagus; an asparagus sandwich.
Arugula, spiced pickled peppers, pesto, provolone on a ciabatta (a bread I normally dont care for b/c it always seems like the stale ends of a crusty bread). The sandwich arrived as the line grew out the door.
Opening the paper wrapped sammy, I discovered a heart-shapped sweet treat (a cookie) in the flap of the wrap. The sammich looked SCRUMMY so I, of course snapped a pic (as i do of my creations and those of others' that deserve facebook posting).
The sandwich was so delicious I opted to go to the store that same week to purchase the fixins to make the same at home. Now as you and I know, that never works out as well as the restaurant creation so Now I "have to" go back to Bertha's.
Gladly.
