| - I think that I've went past this store about a million times over the years without giving a second thought to come in and look around. And, I probably would have never went in if it wasn't for my buddy Jon, who is of Thai descent, who recommended this spot as a real legit spot to get some Thai food.
So me and my friend Jon were at Chaiya one Sunday having a conversation about Thai restaurants that are in the Valley. He suddenly points a small market on Flamingo, where there is a small deli inside, that is making food that reminded him of home. Any spot that makes someone recall their mom's dining room table gets a big thumbs up in my book.
On one of my off days from work, I decided to check out the Bangkok Market. After entering, you will notice a small grocery that carries many types of goods. But IMO, the fun starts when you walk to your left, down the stairs, to the deli.
First, there is the front area to the deli which holds the hot foods. Every day, there is a variety of different types of curries and stir fried dishes. I chose a chicken curry that also contained bamboo, a first for me. I noticed that the curry had a higher proportion of food than sauce, as compared to a typical Thai restaurant. The homestyle preparation had me imagining going over to my friends house and having his mom make me a plate of food. For 5 bucks, it's a great deal.
Next to the hot foods is a refrigerated case which showcases prepared cold items, or heat-and-eat items. I picked up a red curry noodle dish, which was very similar to a version I had at Chaiya. I decided to eat at the market, and one of the ladies was kind enough to warm up my dish for me. The curry was nicely balanced, and I enjoyed the soft noodles that came with it. Once again, it was only 5 dollars.
Whenever I miss my Chaiya fix, Bangkok Market will be able to take it's spot on the Most Wanted list. Most of the foods are only 5-6 bucks, and if you like home-style food, you will really enjoy this spot. I'll be back!! (in my Lloyd Christmas voice) "Ah lock it a laht"
