| - I'm on the fence about how to rate Yes We Cater and have been for several years now. I can't even decide if they should get two or three stars, so I'll give them three because our guests were extremely happy with the food. I mean, really really happy, and a lot of these folks were foodies. That's the point, right?? And everyone we worked with was extremely nice. However, there were times when working with them was just... an absolute mess. Some of those moments made me wonder if I'd rate them one star.
We were throwing a party, to be clear. I cannot imagine what it would've been like to have to deal with some of their ineptitudes and be planning a wedding. Ours should've been a breeze. We are not fussy people, go with the flow, but when I'm spending thousands of dollars, I'm also going to expect a certain level of service.
The bad: it takes them FOR-EVER to respond to e-mails. It's almost best to call, then follow up with a synopsis of your call. Then call again to make sure that they read it and understand. Oh my GOSH I cannot count the times I had to write/call/write/write/call/call to confirm the tiniest changes on a menu or on an invoice. You MUST get everything clearly in writing from these folks or you will regret it.
We thought our first meeting with them went well. This is weird though, seriously: we had vegan and vegetarian guests coming. We said we wanted to make sure there were things they could eat. They kept saying that they do all-vegetarian all the time! No problem! But we really got to a point where we weren't sure if they even understood what "vegetarian" meant much less
vegan because they kept trying to put a little meat in everything. It was so strange. Even down to the broths, or whether there were eggs or gelatin in any components of a vegan dish.
Also, certain items simply weren't served that were on our menu, like the second soup shots, the vegetarian spring rolls, and the CREPE for our vegan dish, which was an entree. There were marshmallows in the sweet potatoes too, something that we didn't want and wasn't served to us during the tasting.
Wet aren't 100% sure where the leftovers ended up either...
We had one very strict vegan who was not able to eat most of the things that were supposed to be vegan because of last-minute garnishes like the marshmallows. When I mentioned this to one of the owners/chefs, he was gung-ho about wanting to create a dish for him there on the fly, but that should not have even happened because we were PAYING for a vegan dish. We still can't figure out why this happened.
They also never cut one of our cakes. We were so busy we didn't realize. It was overall a weird experience.
The good: they are extremely nice. Our parents were at the venue before hand and they were very impressed with how hard everyone worked. I mean, these are really nice people who make outstanding food. They've got to get the business end of it together, though. "Nice" will only get you so far, and I want them to go far.
They accommodated some last minute decisions about chairs with aplomb and patience. They actually got all of the necessaries to put the thing together, like plate, cups, silverware, table cloths, etc. and that looked beautiful.
The servers and bartenders were perfect. Everyone commented on how professional and even fun they were - really made our guests feel comfortable, which is important because you can't be at every table every moment.
They did respond to our upset about absent food items we'd paid top dollar for after in a manner we thought was fair and reasonable. I really just didn't like how I had to hound them during the planning process. So yeah, they do deserve the 3 stars. If it was based on the food alone and not planning and accuracy of the completed project, 4.5. It was a little too harried and slightly unprofessional leading up to it for me to go higher... and I can't get away from the facts that one of our main entrees, and only vegan dish, was incomplete and not truly "vegan," and two of our appetizers were just missing the night of... I was hot mad about this then, but with time and reflection, I think our cumulative experience with them rates a 3.
