  • What is with me and over-hyped restaurants for the end of 2012? Scarpetta definitely belongs in this category based on the taste vs price category. I mean, the restaurant looked nice, and the service was decent (if not spotty)...but the food just didn't do it. Here's what I got to try: Bread: Bread was good, but not amazing like how some reviewers portrayed it. I will give points to them having stromboli =) . Fritto Misto : Nice portion size but $17 for fried seaweed (super oily) with little bits of shrimp? Scallops: Smelled great and was very tasty. $17 for two scallops. Raw Yellowtail: $16 for 4 REALLY thin slices of yellowtail. Jaws not happy. #AVOID Spaghetti: At $24, I expected my mind to be blown into spaghetti heaven, maybe even meeting the dogs from Lady and the tramp. However, I was really underwhelmed by the sauce. There was little to no seasoning so basically all I was tasting was a bit of crushed tomatoes, cheese, with bits of basil. Simplicity does not mean bland. The noodles were cooked al dente and had a nice texture, so that is the lone bright spot. Ugh....BLAND BLAND BLAND. Duck & Foie Gras Ravioli: $26. Foie Gras in a ravioli? Must be amazing right? Instead it was so dry that I felt like I was eating melted sand paper. I thought duck meat was supposed to be tender and juicy? I guess mixing duck meat and foie gras was a bad move. The marsala reduction was delightful as I wish there was more of it to compensate for the dryness of the filling. Roasted Chicken : Finally, a delicious dish. It was cooked perfectly and finally seasoned correctly. I don't mind paying a pretty penny for food...as long as its delicious! But do keep in mind that this was still $29. Chocolate cake: Standard. Doughnuts with filling: It is what it is. Doughnuts tossed in sugar with chocolate/vanilla filling. I couldn't overlook that this dish was COLD when we ate it. I understand that the filling could have caused that...but still... doughnuts should at least be warm! Bottom line: Good environment, spotty service, and overhyped and expensive food give this place 2 stars.
